Ipoh, 25 January. Malaysian Association of Pumpkin Exporters (APE) today launched their new ABU campaign. At a media briefing this morning, the President of APE, Datuk Lim Ah Boo, told journalists that the campaign will propel Malaysia to become a high-income nation and promote healthy life style among Malaysians.

According to Datuk Lim "the aim of the campaign is to discourage Malaysians from eating the various types of ubi - ubi kentang, ubi kayu, ubi badak, ubi keledek and ubi keladi. All these ubi are not good for health. They are full of starch and make you fat. Hence our campaign Asalkan Bukan Ubi (ABU)” stressed Datuk Lim.
Datuk Lim added “we understand we cannot simply tell people just stop eating ubi. We need good alternatives. Therefore we encourage the rakyat to eat more pumpkin – or the labu. The labu is a very nutritious fruit. It is high in Vitamin A, C4 and E and rich in potassium, copper, calcium and phosphorus. It is also an excellent source of many natural poly-phenolic flavonoid compounds. Pumpkin seeds are also good source of dietary fibre and mono-unsaturated fatty acids which are good for the heart”
Celeberity dietician Datin Francisca Merican who was present at the media briefing concurred with Datuk Lim. “The labu is also very versatile. You can make labu curry, you can make sup labu, you can make pengat labu and you can make the famous pumpkin pie. You can even make jus labu”, added Datin Merican.
MNN has learnt that APE intends to organize a nationwide roadshow to educate Malaysians about the benefits of eating labu. The roadshow is expected to begin in Putrajaya next month and move from state to state before ending in Labu-ABU carnival in Kota Kinabalu.
APE is also conducting a campaign among pumpkin growers to boost the production and increase yields. Datuk Lim explained “we are now only producing 40,000 metric tonnes of labu every year. The global demand is 10 times more than this – so if our farmers can increase their production, we can sell more pumpkins. I know there are ready buyers in the US, Europe, Australia and China for our pumpkins. If done correctly, one day the pumpkin can be Malaysia’s number 1 export. Hidup LABU”.

Will LABU in NS become the nation's labu bowl instead of new low cost airport? purrr...meow!
Bwahahaha.
I suddenly have a craving for pengat labu. Where to find this late at night? *sigh*
Cat,
Yes, why not. I hereforth declare that Labu, NS will be the nation's labu bowl. And I appoint the cats to be the guardian of the labus.
Lordapes
Pengat labu...kena buat sendiri la bro. Not easy to find in the shops.
This comes to mind: Janganlah menjadi seperti tikus membaiki labu... teeheehee...
To Lordapes, sometime ago, there were a few stalls near Talasco/Post Office Jalan TAR selling various types of pengat, manisan and even ketupat sotong. My favorite is sira labu, pumpkin cooked in brown sugar, siram kuah santan and tuck in...yummm....since they've built the new road linking Jalan TAR and Kg Baru, the stalls have disappeared.
I'm waiting for my MIL to come back home from NZ tommorrow. Will subtly ask my wife to ask her to cook some pengat labu. Maybe i can get some at pasar malam tonight. :D
